Behind One of the World’s Largest Brands

In 1911, business partners William C. Durant and Louis Chevrolet left their previous roles at Buick Motor Company to form the iconic brand Chevrolet. Shortly after the brand’s founding, the two men experienced enough differences in design that Louis sold his portion of the company to William in 1915. A few years later, General Motors (GM) acquired Chevrolet. Thanks to his success with the Series 490, a range of early vehicles launched in 1915, William was able to purchase a controlling interest in GM, becoming the company’s President. Chevrolet and GM merged but operated as different divisions.

Over the decades, Chevrolet has successfully competed alongside large manufacturers like Ford and Chrysler for a place in the affordable vehicle market. The iconic American brand now has manufacturing facilities in New York, Michigan, California, Ohio, Missouri, Texas, and Canada.

Chevy made major waves in 1953 with the release of the Chevrolet Corvette, a high-performance, sporty sedan. Turning heads again in 1957, the brand launched its first fuel-injected engine, followed shortly after by the Chevrolet Corvair. By 1960, one out of every 10 vehicles sold in the U.S. was made by Chevrolet.

In the 2010s Chevy adapted to the times by launching its first plug-in electric vehicle, the Chevrolet Volt. The Volt went on to earn both the North American Car of the Year and World Green Car of the Year awards.

Routine Maintenance

The extreme reliability of Chevrolet vehicles doesn’t happen by accident; the company has a routine maintenance schedule that every Chevy should follow. Here are the suggested milestones:

  • 7,500 miles and 15,000 miles: Rotate tires and verify oil life percentage and level in the engine. Replace the motor oil and filters as necessary.
  • 22,500 miles: Perform the routine maintenance listed above, along with a passenger compartment air filter replacement. Replace motor oil if needed and if your vehicle is a 4WD Extreme Duty vehicle, you should cycle transfer the case fluid.
  • 30,000 and 37,000 miles: Repeat the routine maintenance from the 7,500 and 15,000-mile checks.
  • 45,000 miles: Rotate tires, verify oil levels, replace motor oil and filters, change passenger air filter and engine air filter, replace fluid in the automatic transmission, refill brake fluid, examine moisture control system, and replace the clutch fluid.
  • 52,000 miles and 60,000 miles: Repeat routine maintenance checks from the 30,000 and 37,000 milestones.
  • 67,500 miles: Rotate tires and change oil, replace passenger air filter, and again replace the transfer case fluid if the vehicle is 4WD Extreme Duty.
