Did you know, General Motors created the Pontiac division in 1926? Pontiac originally was called The Pontiac Springs and Wagon Works Company in 1899. Albert North and Harry Hamilton started this first precursor company that later was swooped up by GM and turned into the Pontiac division for GM. As a part of GM in 1927, Pontiac started building it’s first GM car named the Pontiac Chief. A very great seller for GM, this Pontiac marked the end of the Oakland brand for GM. By 1933, this great seller went from an inline six cylinder engine to an inline eight cylinder engine! 1946 introduced the first Hydra-matic automatic transmission helping Pontiac grow even more. In 1955, Pontiac redesigned the entire body style of the Chief and started producing their first V-8 engines. The late 1950’s produced the first Bonneville, Catalina and Pariseinne. In the 1960’s, great makes including the Firebird, Grand Prix, GTO, Lemans, Tempest and Ventura were roaming the roads for Pontiac. The Acadian, Grand Am, Grand Safari and Sunbird were all added to the mix in the 1970’s.

The 1980’s marked the downsizing age for Pontiac. The Bonneville and Pariseinne stayed large while everything else condensed. The mid-engine Fiero and famous 6000 were born while the full size cars were being phased out. The 1990’s fazed out many models leaving the Bonneville, Firebird / Trans Am, Grand Am, Grand Prix, Sunfire and the new Trans Sport Van. The Firebird had a 3.8 V-6 160 horsepower engine while the Trans Am had a 275 horsepower 5.7 V-8 engine and a Corvette like 6 speed transmission. These cars were great hits outdoing the Ford Mustangs in the same time period. In the 2000’s Pontiac fazed out ending their division for GM by 2010. Pontiac partnered with Porsche with their Solstice car. The firebird fazed out while the GTO had a small comeback. The Aztek, G3, G6, G8, Montana, Torrent and Wave all came and went as Pontiac rolled out their last cars.

Pontiac went out as a legacy for General Motors with their head up high. There were many popular and reliable models of Pontiac cars and suvs that are still on the roads today.
