Advantages of Ceramic Pads:

  • These pads are quieter than semi-metallic pads

Semi-Metallic Pads:

These brake pads have been around quite some time. Semi-metalic pads are made with a combination of synthetic materials and metal fibers as a formula used in the brake pad compound. The higher quality semi metallic pads use fine metallic fibers, while cheaper pads will have larger, more coarse metallic portions of metal imbedded into the compound. Advantages of Semi-Metallic Pads:

  • These semi-metallic pads work great in cold weather or cold climates
  • Semi-metallic pads are used commonly for race tracks and heavy-duty towing applications
  • These pads are relatively less expensive than most ceramic pads

Semi-metallic pads don’t heat up rotors as much as ceramics

Disadvantages of Semi-Metallic Pads:

  • Semi-metallics squeak thus are louder than ceramic pads
  • These pads generate a lot of brake dust that get all over the rims
  • Semi-metallic pads don’t last as long as ceramic pads

Organic Pads:

Organic pads are made of organic materials. These pads are more like alternative pads and are not commonly used on today’s cars. These pads used asbestos for many years in the past. Advantages of Organic Pads:

  • These pads pollute the environment the least
  • They are the quietest brake pads
  • Organic pads are typically the cheapest pads

Disadvantages of Organic Pads:

  • Organic pads do not last like ceramic or semi-metallic pads
  • These pads are not recommended for racing or heavy-duty towing
  • They are just not durable brake pads
